Welcome to Italy, and to the forefront of bioengineering research
In the last week of June 2012, Italy will host the Bioengineering Week (June 20-29 2012): an exciting week totally
dedicated to bioengineering research, featuring a unique concentration of several scientific, cultural and
educational events - mostly taking place in Rome.
Rome is the capital city of Italy with a strategic position in the core of Mediterranean area. It is the third most-
visited tourist destination in the European Union. The city boasts an unrivalled 3,000 year heritage, its historic
center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In late June Rome enjoys a warm climate, which characterizes
the central and southern coasts of Italy.
Rome is also one of the main Biosciences hub in Italy: the city hosts a strong scientific and industrial bioengineering
community, with close ties to a number of leading biological and clinical labs. 5 universities in Rome run a variety of
bioengineering educational programs linked to well-known, leading research centres. Several public and private top
biomedical large research institutes, including many of the National Research Council (CNR), the Italian Institute of
Health (ISS) and the National Agency for Regional Healthcare Services (AGENAS), are based in Rome or nearby.
Biomedical and Bio-Tech large multinational enterprises and SMEs production plants and R&D centres are located in
the Rome area, which also features the highest concentration of hospital beds in Italy.
